July 1 - One Month on the Road

Today is July 1 and we have been biking for a month now with only 3 rest days.   So far we have traveled approximately 1700 miles and have crossed Washington, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota.  Tomorrow we will be in Fargo, our last day crossing North Dakota.  The weather has been bad for about a week now with heavy winds and rain.  Today we rode 75 miles to the town of Enderlin.  Half of us chose to stay in a hotel and the rest are at a campground.  We wanted a warm shower and to get out of the rain.  The hardest part today was when the big trucks passed you on the road because they would kick up a lot of water and push you down the road.  Russ was my hero today because he let me draft most of the way to limit side winds.  Otherwise I might still be out there peddling.  Our hotel is a real dive (but we have been in worse).  The 2 good hotels were already booked by early afternoon when we decided to call ahead for rooms so we are stuck here.  They have 8 rooms, and all of them are filled with cyclists.  Our group took 5 rooms and the remainder are bikers traveling west.

A few days ago we biked through the town of New Salem.  Their claim to fame is that they have the "worlds largest Holstein cow."  Russ spotted it first about 5 miles out and he thought it was a statue of a horse, then he thought it was a grain elevator, but as we got closer, we saw it was a cow.  It stands 38 feet tall and 50 feet long.  We met some cyclist, and they said they climbed up the hill, where it is located and camped under it for the night.  Anyway, it was a neat distraction to see on the road.
